Emsmühle Grüttner in Gudensberg/
Obervorschütz

Automation with Phönix Interbus and PC Worx as well as coupling of a visualisation system via OPC interface

Emsmühle Grüttner is one of the largest flour mills in Northern Hesse with a daily output of 50 t.
When this mill opted for a PC-controlled automation solution and the integration of a visualization system with a standard OPC interface, it became more flexible and efficient.

Once the grain has been delivered, it is transported via a trough chain and vertical bucket conveyors to be unloaded, separated and blended. The coarse mixture obtained is temporarily stored in 5 silos. From these silos, the required quantity is released, mixed and subsequently transported with inverter controlled screw conveyors to the antechamber of the actual mill.

In the mill, there are seven cylinders for grinding the grain. The grist is distributed via 16 channels. The first cylinder is supplied with grain via an automatic tipping cell with pulser.

In order for the operator to maintain his high quality standards, he needs to be able to quickly respond to changing customer requests. Here, a PC-operated control offers optimal flexibility.
All signals and data are stored on the mainframe and can be visualized on the screen.
If the operator enters the corresponding data on the PC, he will be able to respond to the individual requirements of his customers and produce the expected flour within a short time.

Performance characteristics

PC-based control technology

  • An IBS ISA FC 486DX/I-T Field Controller Card manufactured by Phönix Contact is used for controlling the system.
  • This card is installed on a PC from where it regulates the entire process.
  • This card has been equipped with a co-processor board to be able to function independently of the PC and to operate with a real time feature.

Programming

  • Programming will be in accordance with directive IEC 61 131 and carried out with the automation software PC Worx.
  • In this instance, a high-level language oriented, structured text (ST) was used.

Visualisation

  • For visualisation, the Genesis-32 software is used, which is coupled via an OPC interface.
  • The visualisation comprises extensive libraries with pre-defined symbols.
  • In addition, easy-to-use, self-defined symbols can be integrated by using the “Drag and Drop” function.

Field level

  • The field level is addressed via Interbus-I/O modules and can be configured or extended to suit the requirements of the customer.
  • The I/O assemblies need not be housed in the control cabinet itself. Instead, they can be used in the field in the immediate vicinity to sensors and actuators.
  • Data are exchanged via field bus.
